Brazilian-born of mixed race and condemned to poverty, Garments of Fleas is the story of my life. As a child, I carried water to survive and had nothing but an urgent hope to escape the mud-caked floors of my crumbling flea-infested home, earning my freedom from my mother only when she forced me to support her by working as a nanny and maid in a history teacher's home when I was twelve years old. My story is about escape through introspection and reason, searching for answers from cruel circumstances like mine by observing man and nature.
